Spools are used in lieu of differential side gears when you want the rear axles to function as a single unit. The spool is essentially a steel collar that splines both axle shafts together with a flange to bolt the ring gear onto. The result is a solid axle that provides full torque and equal rotation at the same speed on both drive wheels.
